Don't Blame the Boys: We're Giving Them Girly Books
St. Jarre, Kevin R.
English Journal, v97 n3 p15-16 Jan 2008
In this article, the author states that as educators and politicians across the country continue to scratch their heads in dismay at how male secondary students seem to be lagging behind in reading, it is useful to look beyond all of the genetic, physiological, and even sociological theories so often proffered by breathless experts. Anyone who wonders at the boys' performance should take a fresh look at the titles that schools are offering or, more often, mandating. Even as a teacher of secondary English and social studies, the author did not realize for years that it may not be that girls naturally love to read more than boys do. It may be the reading lists.
