In discussing an unpublished document of educational policy written by Sylvia Pankhurst in 1959 the context of its writing should be considered as well as the political, historical and cultural changes that have occurred between the historical moment of its writing and the conditions of its contemporary reception. Pankhurst's educational policy document is a text that can be read and analysed on many levels, but given the restrictions of the author's response, after an overview of the document, she focuses on three areas: (1) the colonial discourse; (2) the gendering of education; and (3) the role of art.
