VanTassel-Baska, Joyce
Gifted Child Quarterly, v51 n1 p5-10 2007
In this presidential address to the National Association of Gifted Children, the author presents a 10-step program that may be used by administrators at the program level and teachers at the classroom level to lead gifted education forward in its attempts to optimize learning for gifted learners as well as to address the needs of all learners. The 10 steps are: (1) Know How Students Learn; (2) Know Best Practice Research for Gifted Programming and Services; (3) Differentiate the Curriculum Content for Gifted Learners; (4) Develop Service Options Specific to Promising Students of Poverty; (5) Teach Students to Ask the Right Questions; (6) Incorporate the Arts; (7) Prepare Students for a Global and Multicultural World; (8) Prepare Educators to Provide Quality Instruction; (9) Create and Institutionalize Systems for Identifying and Serving Gifted Students, K-12; and (10) Collaborate With Other Stakeholders Within and Outside the Field of Gifted Education to Promote Student Learning Communities. These 10 steps should result in better programs and services to the gifted as well as improved classroom instruction and learning outcomes for all.
