Getting to the Center of a Tootsie Roll Pop

In this article, the author describes an activity he introduced to his engineering drafting students that involved a Tootsie Roll product. In this particular activity, he assigned his students to find out how many licks are needed to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop. He first asked his students to do some research if an answer exists for this challenge. His students found in the Tootsie Roll website that engineering students at Purdue University had worked initially on the problem. His students saw an example of the machine used the Purdue students and they soon began the design process and started a solution of their own. (Contains 4 resources.)
