Pyramid of Interventions: A Progression of Academic Support

Principal Leadership, v8 n4 p28-31 Dec 2007
What happens in a school when, despite teachers' best efforts in the classroom, students do not learn? The administrators and faculty members at Papillion-La Vista South High School in Nebraska asked themselves this question when they realized that some of their students were struggling, were not turning in work, did not seem to care, and were willing to take a zero on incomplete work. As part of district initiatives, many staff members began to read "Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Do not Learn," by Richard DuFour, Rebecca DuFour, Robert Eaker, and Gayle Karhanek (2004, National Education Service). These authors espouse the belief that no student should be allowed to fail. The leadership team embraced this philosophy and decided to make it part of the school culture by implementing a program that coordinates Papillion-La Vista South's mission statement of maximizing student achievement with the school improvement goals and the individual course syllabi used in each classroom. The plan, described here, is called the "Titan Pyramid."
