Minority Coaches Are Still Scarce in Big-Time College Football
Sander, Libby
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n8 pA32 Oct 2007
The number of minority coaches leading the nation's largest collegiate football programs remains low, with 13 of the 241 head-coaching positions in Divisions I-A and I-AA held by members of minority racial or ethnic groups, a report on hiring practices released last week by the organization Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) says. Only two minority coaches--Randy Shannon at the University of Miami, who is African-American, and Mario Cristobal at Florida International University, who is Hispanic-American--were hired as head coaches of big-time college football programs during the 2006-07 hiring cycle, despite 33 open positions, the report states. The BCA has issued annual reports since 2004 grading colleges in the NCAA's top division that have hired head football coaches in the previous academic year. This year's study looks at the 33 institutions--21 from Division I-A and 12 from Division I-AA--that hired head football coaches during 2006-07. Each was assigned a final grade based on five aspects of the hiring process, including how diverse the institution's pool of candidates was and the amount of time the institution took in deciding whom to hire. Eighteen institutions received grades of A or B, while 12 institutions received grades of D or F.
