Advice to Beginners--And to Myself
Groome, Thomas H.
Religious Education, v102 n4 p362-366 Sep 2007
There are enduring features to the human condition and to Christian faith, and thus to the challenge of integrating these two. In this article, the author shares learned wisdom with beginning religious educators. He emphasizes seven important aspects of religious education: (1) Attending to one's own growth toward holiness of life; (2) Being clear about one's purposes as religious educator; (3) Being true to the constitutive faith of the community but avoiding even the hint of sectarianism; (4) Getting to know as well as possible the people with whom one educates; (5) Encouraging a religious education consciousness in faith communities and families; (6) Constantly reflecting upon and trying to improve one's approach to doing religious education; and (7) Balancing one's own best efforts with the memory of God's grace.
