Simpler and Safer: One Password Opens Many Online Doors
Carnevale, Dan
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n7 pA31 Oct 2007
Going online nowadays often requires more log-ins and passwords than most people can remember. Faculty and staff members will sometimes write their various passwords on yellow sticky notes and post them on their computer monitors--leaving confidential data wide open to any passer-by. What if there were just one password? A single log-on for e-mail accounts, research data, and even access to journal articles and other commercial services? Not only would that be easier on users and technology officials, but also more secure for computer networks. A one-password system does exist. A new group called InCommon made up of 45 colleges and universities, together with 17 businesses, organizations, and a federal agency, has begun to coordinate online access. At each campus, this puts services such as JSTOR, a digital archive of scholarly journals, and Turnitin, an online plagiarism-detection service, one click away for any user. At the same time, the system makes sure that each user has access only to services he or she has the right to use. The key is software called Shibboleth, a "middleware" program that acts as a gatekeeper between users and secure computer networks.
