Reflections on ""Men Must Be Educated and Women Must Do It": The National Federation (Later Union) of Women Teachers and Contemporary Feminism 1910-30," Hilda Kean and Alison Oram, "Gender and Education," 2(2), 1990
Kean, Hilda
Gender and Education, v19 n6 p657-662 Nov 2007
In this article, the author shares her views on the collected works on women suffrage from 1920-1930, which were collated by the activists at National Federation of Women Teachers (NFWT). She relates how she had been impressed by the NFWT activists' organizational capacity to coordinate 70 identically worded motions in support of women's suffrage, which the author knew from experience as a hard feat to accomplish even after seven decades. The author also explains that the potential identification she saw with feminist teachers in the 1920s and 1930s was similar to how socialists and feminists were marginalized in the late 1980s. She also relates how these feminist teachers' history, how their pasts were used, remembered and configured for the present has been a theme that underpinned her writing, teaching and research since the mid 1990s. These teachers' own reflections on their past lives helped create interest in the nature of historical memory and the forms in which past is fashioned in the present.
