Study Abroad Blossoms into Big Business
Farrell, Elizabeth F.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n2 pA49 Sep 2007
In recent years, studying abroad has grown in both prestige and popularity. Business and political leaders increasingly see it as one of the most effective ways to produce globally literate citizens. College administrators agree and are looking for ways to reduce the barriers--both financial and academic--that prevent most undergraduates from going overseas. In this article, the author discusses how administrators, both at colleges and at study abroad programs, are faced with the challenging tasks of keeping costs in check while ensuring that ever-rising standards of quality are met. Traditionally, foreign study has evoked images of sightseeing and socializing, with a few randomly chosen courses thrown in. Now administrators and study-abroad directors want students to take academically rigorous classes, improve their foreign-language fluency, gain cultural literacy, and return home with a better understanding of the global economy.
