It came as a great surprise recently to read in "The New York Times" that the New York attorney general's office had launched an investigation into possible financial improprieties between colleges and outside organizations that provide study-abroad programs. Subpoenas had been issued to five of the largest program providers, "with more to come." Benjamin Lawsky, deputy counsel to the attorney general, has subsequently indicated that subpoenas will also be issued to some colleges and universities. While it remains unclear what specific incident prompted the investigation, it was intimated that there were suspicions of "gifts" and payoffs, "too cozy" relationships between colleges and providers, financial "kickbacks" that benefited institutions but not students, subsidized travel junkets, and other unspecified questionable practices. In this article, the author emphasizes the essentiality of maintaining public trust and institutional integrity through transparency and openness about the relationship between institutions and providers.
