What would technological librarians like to see in the next generation of Integrated Library Systems (ILS)? This question was asked of several well- known library technology experts, and their responses are presented in this article. Survey respondents expressed a clear desire for the following features and functionality: (1) Direct, read-only access to data, preferably through an open source database management system like MySQL; (2) A standard way to communicate with the ILS, preferably through an application programming interface; (3) Standards-compliant systems including better security and more complete documentation; (4) The ability to run the ILS on hardware that the library selects and on servers that the library administers; (5) Greater interoperability of systems, pertaining to the systems within the library (including components from vendors, open source communities, and homegrown systems) and beyond (enterprise-level systems such as courseware and university portals, and shared library systems such as OCLC); (6) Greater distinction between the ILS (which needs to efficiently manage a library's business processes) and the OPAC (which needs to be a sophisticated finding tool); and (7) Better user interfaces, making use of the most current technologies available and providing a single interface to all of the library's holdings, regardless of format.
