Break the Use It or Lose It Cycle: Six Strategies for Curbing Undisciplined Technology Spending
McIntire, Todd
Technology & Learning, v26 n12 p28 Jul 2006
In this article, the author presents six strategies for curbing undisciplined technology spending. These are: (1) Scrub budgets clean; (2) Track by objective, not time; (3) Reject unfocused expenditures; (4) Provide incentives to spend under budget; (5) Invest extra funds in useful materials; and (6) Contribute to fund balances. Too often one works for the good of his own departmental goals without due consideration of the overall needs of the organization. Simply put, surpluses are good for everyone and deficits are bad for everyone. If one contributes to an organizational fund balance by returning budget surpluses at the end of the year, he is adding to the health of the institution and positioning it for greater future successes.
