Preventing School Failure, v51 n1 p49-54 Fall 2006
Successful transitioning and reintegrating students from alternative programs requires staff to (a) operate from an effective model that includes all stakeholders as participants, (b) follow guidelines that structure the process prior to, during, and at the follow-up stages, and (c) designate staff with responsibility for coordination and implementation. The authors recommend the ecological approach as an effective model for students exiting an alternative program, whether they are transitioning to community life or reintegrating to the home school. This model includes assessing the strengths and needs of the child's social system, setting clear goals and objectives, and involving all stakeholders, including the student, family, alternative school staff, public school personnel, and other community agencies. The authors discuss specific practical guidelines based on the ecological approach. These guidelines also include the role and function of a designated staff person who identifies strengths and needs, mobilizes resources, and facilitates communication among all participants in the students' social system.
