First Class Education, an organization based in Washington D.C., is trying to persuade the voting public to pass a law that could eliminate school libraries and many other educational support services. First Class Education promotes the idea that sixty-five percent of instructional money should be spent in the classroom. At first blush, this sounds like a wonderful idea because almost everyone believes that teachers and classrooms need more money. However, upon further examination, the realities of such a funding law are catastrophic. "As with most simple and seemingly attractive ideas, the "65 Percent Solution" is deceptive. In this case, the deception is deliberate: "the 65 Percent Solution" is in fact a 100 percent deception." In this article, the author explains why librarians and other educational support services will be gravely affected by this legislation. She also discusses several ideas on how states can defeat the "65 Percent Solution."
