Selecting suitable lab activities for the author's students has always been a challenge. There are a few expensive industrial controls training units on the market that look useful, but they far exceed the limits of his budget. His lab needed some sort of motor controls training unit that would use the actual hardware that students could expect to encounter in industry, but it had to be compact and portable, in addition to being affordable. In this article, the author demonstrates how he constructed his own industrial controls trainer.
