A Customized Campaign against Bullying
Ruder, Robert
Principal Leadership, v6 n1 p36-38 Sep 2005
Delivering a powerful anti-bullying message to middle school students is a challenge for middle level administrators, their staff members, and their students. However, there are many options to tackle this challenge. One option is to import a well-respected and capable external expert to present an anti-bullying program to students and offer inservice or staff development opportunities for staff members. Another method is to purchase a commercially prepared curriculum that focuses on bullying. The success of this type of program is largely dependent on the comfort level of the teachers who are responsible for delivering the program. There are other ways to develop programs, however, and to involve students and the school community in the entire process. The Neff Sixth Grade School has successfully implemented one such program, which engages students in writing a school-specific play about bullying. Students wrote, produced, and performed a play drawing on their experiences with bullying. The play's anti-bullying message has now been integrated into the school's daily routine. The most obvious benefit associated with an anti-bullying campaign delivered through a dramatic production is the reduction of bullying within the school environment. The play need not be perceived as the end of or the solution to the problem, but rather as a starting point for ongoing awareness and educational initiatives.
