Opening Doors to the Future
Leckie, Steven
Principal Leadership, v5 n1 p34-37 Sep 2004
To teach students how to become contributing members of society, Park View High School in Sterling, Virginia, focuses on collaboration, diversity, and volunteerism. Since developing leaders is part of being a community of collaboration, a curricular component supports its efforts to model the kind of leadership it wants its students to develop. To teach leadership and people skills, it offers a peer class. Students in this class develop their listening and facilitating skills as they listen to students with problems, befriend them, and refer them to appropriate resources for help. Students also reach out to one another through a conflict-mediation class. Park View uses periodic awards to recognize achievement and improvement toward success. Each spring, the Patriots Achievement Toward Success (PATS) awards recognize students who have worked hard to achieve some measure of success. Teachers are encouraged to recognize minority students and look for students whose success may not necessarily place them at the top of the class, but who have made great personal strides.
