In this article, the author describes the intergenerational service-learning program at South Scranton Intermediate School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Currently in its fifth year of operation, the program was originated by William King, a former principal, as an attempt to develop a working relationship between Oakwood Terrace, an Alzheimer's care center in Moosic, Pennsylvania, and student volunteers from the middle school's Serving and Learning Together (SALT) classes. During the past five years, South Intermediate's program has consistently provided a service to the school and community with a special emphasis on helping senior citizens. The program takes students to visit Oakwood Terrace every week. Students undergo intensive training to learn how to work one-on-one with residents. Learning how to handle unusual situations has helped students' academic and social skills and increased their self-confidence. The program has allowed students and residents to experience great things.
