A strong academic background and a firm grasp of subject matter are essential qualifications for all candidates. However, there are more important things than content knowledge, academic background, or particular skills, and even more important than prior teaching experience. Teachers with the right stuff are teachers who have the character, desire, attitude, personal qualities, and potential to become great teachers. In this article, the authors discuss a 10-step program that identifies candidates who have the right stuff to be excellent teachers: (1) Setting goals and identifying needs; (2) Recruiting teachers; (3) Establishing interview criteria; (4) Reading resumes; (5) Forming and training screening committees; (6) Interviewing candidates; (7) Using rating scales; (8) Demonstration lessons; (9) Decision making; and (10) Preteaching training program. The time spent recruiting the right teachers, training screening committees, reading resumes, interviewing candidates, and observing demonstration lessons is important and productive time that has immeasurable benefits. With the right teachers on board, a great school will be built.
