Trustees Don't Expect to Give as Much Money as Their Colleges Ask
Selingo, Jeffrey
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n36 pA16 May 2007
By the time Tufts University announced its $1.2 billion fund-raising campaign last fall, it had already raised $615 million in the quiet phase. About half of those early donations came from just 39 people--the university's Board of Trustees. In an era when nearly every higher-education institution seems to be in the midst of or planning a capital campaign, members of governing boards are increasingly being tapped for big donations, often more than once. This article reports the results of a survey conducted by "The Chronicle" that examined trustees' donations to colleges. While they may have been ready to give money when they joined the board, many of them have come to believe that two of their greatest challenges are colleges' unrealistically high expectations of trustees' ability to go out and raise funds, and of their willingness to make donations themselves. Trustees ranked both problems among their top three challenges, along with divisiveness on their boards, from a list of nine issues presented in one survey question. According to 40 percent of the respondents, colleges' expectations of trustees' generosity as donors was an even bigger issue for board members who felt unprepared for their service.
