Campbell Loughmiller (1906-1993) is widely recognized as a leader in therapeutic work with troubled youngsters in outdoor settings. Rejecting punitive or institutional models of intervention, Loughmiller set out to demonstrate that every young person has strengths, desires to make positive changes, can grow in responsibility, and contribute to others. An intense, democratic small group process taught youth to work together, master challenging problems, and develop respect for self and others. Loughmiller authored two books about his practical methods and philosophy, including "Wilderness Road" (1965), and "Kids in Trouble: An Adventure in Education" (1979). This article draws from Grover Loughmiller's (2004) discussion of his father's contributions to therapeutic camping and education.
