Selecting Books for Spanish-Speaking ESL Students

Library media specialist should be prepared to select books appropriate for each student's needs. In this article, the author suggests that when making selections for Spanish-Speaking ESL students, look for the following characteristics: (1) Choose books with simple, limited text and pictures on each page, (2) Select bilingual books with text in the foreign language and in English on the same page or adjoining pages, (3) Preview books for vocabulary, (4) Don't assume that the author of the book is native to the culture depicted, (5) Take notice of books with unique cultural situations, (6) Choose Spanish-language books that were originally written in English, (7) Purchase bilingual dictionaries with simple format and organization, (8) Give students strategies for self-selecting books in English, (9) Connect student interests and reading level, and (10) Level books or group them by level of difficulty in a special section of the media center.
