Romani Women and Popular Education
Flecha, Ainhoa; Oliver, Esther
Convergence, v37 n2 p7-26 2004
The Romani community has traditionally been excluded from many spaces of participation, in many cases within the labour market and education. In this article, the authors analyse the situation of the Romani community, focusing especially on the reality of Romi who have been the catalysts of profound change for themselves as women and their community as a whole. The Romani women have not only been analysing the situations of discrimination they face, but they are defining a vision of their future and taking concrete actions to reach their goals. They have identified education as a key source to overcome the social inequalities they face and help them to change their realities. The authors look at how Romani women are transforming gender relations, their participation in society, many aspects of their daily lives and their horizons and that of their daughters through their participation in dialogically-oriented adult education centres, which are allowing them to build spaces of dialogue, reflection and social action. The authors conclude that guaranteed practices and projects that respect, value and promote the voices of Romani women is a must to fulfill their dreams. (Contains 1 table and 9 notes.)
