Forensic science lends itself to many academic areas. Aside from the science itself, writing plays a major role in the investigation process as well as in the courtroom. It is paramount that students learn how to write proficiently when recording results or writing evaluations and reports, just as forensic scientists do. This can also be done through narrative, persuasive, and expository writing. This article describes "Partners in Crime," a project that integrates forensic science and writing. On a large scale, this project takes a great deal of planning, but can be successfully modified to a much smaller scale that still combines science and writing. This article provides ideas that are helpful for teachers in setting up a mock case on a larger scale. One of these is the importance of bringing community members into the classroom before setting up a mock crime scene. This article concludes that students will be actively engaged in learning while improving and honing their skills as writers. Students will talk about the case outside of class and exchange ideas during lunch. They are not only writing the scientific process, they are using higher level thinking skills to evaluate and weigh evidence in correlation to the case. New relationships are developed with the community and students will embark on a real-life journey of a crime scene investigator. (Contains 5 online resources.)
