Moving beyond Censorship: What Will Educators Do if a Controversy over "His Dark Materials" Erupts?
Glanzer, Perry
Phi Delta Kappan, v87 n2 p166-168 Oct 2005
Philip Pullman's popular fantasy series "His Dark Materials" is sure to arouse the ire of Christian parents if it ever gets used in public schools. Pullman's books contain direct attacks upon Christianity, and Pullman himself admits that his writing attempts to "undermine the basis of Christian belief." Educators must realize that this kind of ideologically inspired fiction raises ethical issues of fairness and not just censorship concerns. The author suggests ways that a liberal education can balance the ideological perspectives presented in such literature.
