Given that the society has not been able to redistribute financial support away from day and sheltered programs, it needs to cut off the supply of consumers. To make this happen, Rusch and Braddock offered two recommendations in their study: (1) All students must leave high school either competitively employed or admitted to a postsecondary education program in their 18th year; and (2) All students must have access to long-term support services to ensure a successful transition to competitive employment and/or postsecondary education. In this article, the author provides his own suggestions to the Rusch and Braddock study. He suggests: (1) Teaching all students self-determination skills; (2) Expanding the mission of programs for 18- to 21-year-olds; (3) Focusing on interagency collaboration; (4) Improving preparation of personnel; and (5) Refocusing on the positive outcomes of supported employment.
