Meet Helen J. Post-Brown, Director: Sunbeam Child Care Center, Fairmont, West Virginia
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n164 p26-27 Jul-Aug 2005
This article profiles Helen J. Post-Brown, director of Sunbeam Child Care Center in Fairmont and president of West Virginia Childcare Centers United, and explains how Post-Brown faced the obstacles when managing a child care business. In the fall of 1980, Post-Brown started Sunbeam as a small preschool with 12 children. Over the years, Sunbeam has evolved to a fully licensed, nationally accredited child care center, licensed for 95 children with 25 employees. The center is still located in the residential area of Fairmont and is still connected to her home. Lacking of managerial experience, she signed up to become an Apprentice for Child Development Specialist in order to improve her director's skills. Together with Norma Fray, executive director of the River Valley Child Development Center, and other child care directors, they formed a group called Directors on a Mission, which later evolved into West Virginia Childcare Centers United. As president of WVCCU for the past 4 years, she has learned that it can take a small group of dedicated people to make a difference and each person in his/her own way can truly make a difference.
