An Opportunity for Board Development: The Director-Board Relationship
Gadzikowski, Ann; Lipton, Linda
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n159 p8-10 Sep-Oct 2004
One of the very unique characteristics of child care boards is the prevalence of parent volunteers serving as board members. When parents serve as board members, a number of challenges are created. Because most parents do not have previous board experience and they are both clients as well as trustees, there is the potential for conflicts of interest and unclear role definition. However, relationships between directors and boards can be developed when: (1) Both parties have similar core values; (2) There is trust; (3) Communication happens regularly; and (4) Expectations are clarified. This article presents a list of suggestions on how to build director-board relationships.
