Why Children Need Experiences Tailored to Their Uniqueness
Brazelton, T. Berry; Greenspan, Stanley I.
Early Childhood Today, v21 n4 p10-11 Jan-Feb 2007
This article focuses on the need of meaningful experiences to children's individual differences. The degree to which one can tailor experiences to each child's unique qualities increases the likelihood that the child will grow up physically, intellectually, and emotionally healthy and thus able to meet the expectations of family and society. This article presents processes on how to deal with the problem. It is necessary to recognize individual uniqueness and make important assumptions. Such assumptions are the following: (1) the uniqueness of each child; (2) families and educators working together; (3) learning through dynamic emotional interactions; (4) no room for failure; (5) small groups; and (6) foundation-building time each day. The individual-difference approach to education has the potential to significantly change the way people think about children and families in the educational settings.
