A Movable Feat
Vita, Tricia
Teacher Magazine, v16 n2 p22-25 Oct 2004
Traveling classrooms for carnival kids didn't really come on the scene until the 1990s when Linda Brewer, a teacher of the Conklin International Academy, helped the idea get off the ground. The trade publication "Amusement Business" lists 325 carnivals in its annual booking guide, but fewer than a dozen shows have schools because it is expensive to develop. In addition, it is difficult to find a teacher who is not only qualified to teach a shifting roll of students at many grade levels in different subject areas in the same room, but also willing to do so in a trailer that travels across the continent. This article describes how Brewer travels with the Conklin Shows Carnival to teach the children of concessionaires, ride owners, and other men and women who make up the carnival. This article also describes how she ended up as a teacher in a traveling carnival.
