Swope, Sam
Teacher Magazine, v15 n6 p34-39 May-Jun 2004
In this article, the author relates how he has been enthralled after reading "Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing" by A. S. Neill. The book describes a boarding school in England that Neill founded in 1921. Classes at Summerhill were optional; instead of being bored all day by mind-numbing lectures, one could do what he or she wanted. The author relates how he had been surprised upon learning later that the school described in the book actually existed. The author describes what he personally observed from the way students are taught in the school during his visit.
