Shift Would Add Burden on Principals
Killion, Joellen
Journal of Staff Development, v25 n4 p59-60 Fall 2004
In this article, the author describes how the transition from district-centered to school-based staff development can add to the burden on principals. This column first presents a brief review of the efforts of Braxton Hinsdale, a staff development director who advocated for moving professional development resources from the district level to the school level. Hinsdale encouraged principals to take a more active role in planning and implementing professional development aligned with the school's improvement goals, and urged them to prepare and submit school-based staff development plans that would be reviewed at the district level to ensure that the school-based practices were sound and standards-based. This review is followed by a description of the work of Rachel Montoya, an instructional coach whose job is to provide coaching and support to individual teachers, conduct demonstration lessons, assist grade-levels teams and content-specific teams in developing standards-based instructional units, and facilitate professional learning experience within the school.
