Education for the Other Side of Gaming
Stone, Michael R.
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers, v81 n8 p27-29 Nov-Dec 2006
In this article, the author talks about gambling and how career and technical education can play a role in gaming education. While the growth of gambling fuels the economy, it can also fuel hidden addiction. Identified by the American Psychiatric Association in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the Mental Disorders as pathological gambling, it is the equal-opportunity addiction of the 21st century. In an effort to prevent students from becoming a gambling addict or problem gambler, the author suggests career and technical educators to teach their students the importance of responsibility in gaming. In this article, the author describes some organizations that offer help and resources for teachers, counselors and administrators, who wish to incorporate gambling awareness education and prevention. He discusses the National Council on Problem Gambling Web site, www.ncpgambling.org, which provides links to state councils on problem and pathological gambling.
