Students' Take: After School Programming for Young People
Donlevy, Jim
International Journal of Instructional Media, v33 n2 p125 Spr 2006
This article deals with one interesting area of Thirteen/WNET's website (www.thirteen.org), which is Students' Take, designed especially for children in after school programs. Students' Take offers students in after school programs the opportunity to publish original Web pieces covering a range of topics of special interest to them. Its participants learn about the world of online publishing. Its projects include: (1) "Learning More through Financial Literacy"; (2) "Monitoring Scientific Progress"; (3) "New Frontiers in Science and Space Technology"; and (4) "Cyberchase Review." Involvement in such projects help students explore a topic in detail, learn about the editorial aspects of Web publishing, follow professional guidelines and learn how to make appropriate citations when referencing the work of others. These activities reinforce regular school learning and increase the academic skills of participants. With Students' Take, young people in after school programs have a wonderful opportunity to learn about Web publishing working directly with staff at Thirteen/WNET.
