Creating Community at Group Time
Church, Ellen Booth
Early Childhood Today (1), v21 n1 p44-45 Aug-Sep 2006
The beginning of the year is the right time to establish a climate of kindness, caring, and sharing for a teacher's group-time meetings. Group time is often a teacher's first "formal" introduction to the children, and a time when a teacher sets the stage for creating a sense of community. By demonstrating a teacher's loving acceptance for all children's backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints, he or she can create a group-time environment that says, "All are welcome here." With a focus on helping children develop skills in collaboration, responsibility, and self-regulation, one's back-to-school group time can be the place where it all starts. In this article, the author provides suggestions for teachers on how they may create community during group time with their students.
