Modular Arithmetic and Year 8
Cerval-Pena, Eligio
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n195 p34-35 Mar 2006
In this article, the author describes his experiences when he decided to teach university-level mathematics to Year 8. Handling a particularly able class who had investigated the isoperimetric problem, he was confident that the class was more than up to the challenge and adequately motivated. Using a Powerpoint, he delivered the lessons to the class with appropriate gaps for discussion and class interaction and questions. Having followed the lessons through, he found that the pupils enjoyed the exploration and challenge while gaining both self-confidence and possibly even a further interest in mathematics. The author also found this subject incredibly satisfying to teach. He points out that very often time constraints prevent teachers from having the opportunity to allow students to discover the variety and wonder of mathematics. Teaching this particular subject matter, presented him with that rare opportunity. (Contains 2 notes.)
