This article deals with students hacking school computer systems. School districts are getting tough with students "hacking" into school computers to change grades, poke through files, or just pit their high-tech skills against district security. Dozens of students have been prosecuted recently under state laws on identity theft and unauthorized entry into computer databases. In this article, the author talks about some incidents on high school students hacking into school computers and charged with felony charges. Although some students and parents complained that criminal charges were an overreaction, school officials say they were given no choice. Despite repeated warnings, students continued to misuse equipment, and lesser disciplinary actions--including detentions, suspensions, and removing their computer privileges--did not deter the misbehavior. Among other things, the author emphasizes on school officials' role in educating students about the responsible use of computers and why it's important.
