The New Immigrant Students Need More than ESL
Smith-Davis, Judy
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n8 p21-26 Apr 2004
Students who speak minority language and have limited proficiency in English are currently the fastest-growing population in public schools in the US. In this article, the author reports the findings of his preliminary study on five school districts that had experienced significant influxes of immigrant students. These five school districts include Clark County in Las Vegas NV, Lee County, NC, Prince George's County, MD, Portland, ME and Community School District #17 of the New York City Board of Education. Some of the findings reveals concerns the lack of qualified teaching personnel to accommodate the rising numbers of immigrant students and the lack of parental involvement due to language barriers.
