Policies & Practices: Springtime Celebrations and Rituals
Wilford, Sara
Early Childhood Today, v19 n6 p12-13 Apr 2005
The warm days of spring announce an end to the dark days of winter, more time out of doors, and escape from the confines of heavy clothing. For many directors of early childhood centers, a school year does not end with the onset of summer. However, even if it is a year-round program with no official conclusion, warmer days are bound to bring a different aura and structure. Spring is a logical time to take stock of the center's accomplishments since September. It is an important time for parents and teachers to meet to review children's progress. And it is a time to make plans for spending more school hours exploring the outside environment. Picnics, springtime celebrations, and informal family get-togethers will benefit from the more informal atmosphere this time of year brings. In this article, the author presents possible activities for children remaining in the program for the next year and for children leaving the program because they are relocating or planning to attend a local public or independent school.
