Making the Transition from Face-to-Face to Cyberspace
Simmons, Susan; Jones, Wesley, Jr.; Silver, Stephen
TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning, v48 n5 p50-55, 83 2004
College and university faculty members are comfortable with their role as facilitators of learning in the traditional classroom setting. However, how do they move a current course to the online format? Is an online course merely a transfer of materials used in the course to an online format? The experiences and research results of these authors offer answers to these questions and lead readers through the steps of moving from a face-to-face (F2F) course to an online format. To help with the presentation, three different web course models implemented in courses at The Citadel's School of Business Administration are defined: (1) A web course, or online course, is available anywhere, anytime. Students do not meet on site; (2) A web-enhanced course is a face-to-face course augmented by use of the web (Conrad and Boettcher, 2000); and (3) An E-Pack course may be either a web-enhanced or an online course. The E-Pack, provided by a textbook publisher, supplements the printed text and works with course management software such as WebCT (WebCT, Inc., 2003) or BlackBoard (BlackBoard, Inc., 2003). This article is divided into three sections that address three topics. First, how does online learning differ from face-to-face learning? Second, what are the steps and resources available for bringing a course to the web? Finally, the authors present their own experiences with the three web course options.
