Reconceptualising the Visual in Narrative Inquiry into Teaching
Johnson, Greer Cavallaro
Teaching & Teacher Education: An International Journal of Research and Studies, v20 n5 p423-434 Jul 2004
This paper reports on a study that attempts to encourage teachers to use a visual and verbal approach to storytelling as a method of critical reflection. It demonstrates and discusses how one teacher uses the visual images to comment critically, adding a playfully ironic dimension to a verbal perspective of everyday teaching activities. Many studies that use the visual mode for teacher reflection attend to its potential to reinforce the truthful, stable nature of the verbal tale. The approach taken here is particularly significant since it offers storytellers a means of disrupting the stability of their own tales about professional activity and therefore creates the potential for intensifying the process of critical reflexivity.
