A Dream Realized
Pierpont, Katherine
Teaching Pre K-8, v36 n3 p36-39 Nov-Dec 2005
This article features the Center for Inquiry, a school where the teachers are making their dreams come true. As a school designed wholly by teachers, the Center for Inquiry (CFI) in Indianapolis, Indiana, is teaching kids how to take ownership of learning. Originally designed to be a school within a school for exchange and preservice teachers, the CFI is now centered on teaching kids how to be inquisitive about their world. Inquiry is a method of learning in which students are encouraged to ask questions about things, pursue the answers themselves, and then use the answers as a starting point for further study. Now in its 12th year of operation, the Center for Inquiry and its teachers have let nothing get in their way of dreaming big--especially if it means making a difference in the lives of their students.
