The Ministering Community as Context for Religious Education: A Case Study of St. Gabriel's Catholic Parish
Fleischer, Barbara J
Religious Education, v101 n1 p104-122 Win 2006
Based on interviews and surveys of two groups of lay pastoral leaders at one predominantly African-American Catholic Parish, this qualitative study explores the "learning organization" dynamics of the congregation based Peter Senge's (1990) description of the five disciplines of learning organizations (personal mastery, shared vision, unearthing mental models, team learning, and systems thinking). One significant finding is that the pastoral leaders consider "involvement in ministry" a major pathway for learning in the congregation. This praxis-oriented dynamic is discussed in light of religious education models proposed by Maria Harris, Charles Foster, Jack Seymour, and Donald Miller, and others.
