Perceived Barriers to Research Utilization by Korean University Librarians
Kim, Kapseon
Journal of Academic Librarianship, v31 n5 p438-448 Sep 2005
Using a standard survey instrument, the Barrier Scales, the present study surveyed university librarians' perceptions of barriers to greater use of library and information research utilization in Seoul, Korea. The greatest barrier was that the implications of research for practice were unclear, followed by a lack of replication of the research, and insufficient time on the job to implement new ideas. Also, incomprehensible English research reports and statistical analyses were perceived as major barriers. The responses of Korean librarians were compared to similar studies of nursing professionals for cross validation. Suggestions for overcoming barriers to implementing research are discussed in terms of education, practice, research, and the production of theory.
