Process Versus Product
Remmo, Matthew J.
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers, v80 n8 p32-34 Nov-Dec 2005
This article asks the question: "What can you get when you combine 100 students from three career technical programs, six student-created concepts, three highly-motivated instructors, and two leaders in automotive technology?" The answer can be found in this author's description of a program at the Elkhart Area Career Center (EACC) in Elkhart, Indiana, where students in a computer aided design class began designing a new product at the request of a major automotive producer (Troyer Products). The goal of the educational staff involved in this project was not only to have the students go from start to finish on a "real-world" project, but also to incorporate the elements of teamwork within the project. The product was 80 percent complete by the end of the three months, and, although this did not sit well with some of the students involved, they learned that it is not about the product as much as it is the process and what was learned during their work on this project.
