Reflective Discipline: Providing Students a Tool for Self-Reflection Can Decrease Classroom Disruptions--And Help Identify the Problems behind Them

This article discusses the author's experiences with the reflective discipline approach. It concludes that for the author, using this system dramatically reduced classroom discipline problems and acting out no longer garners an amused audience of peers. Finally, and the author finds, perhaps most importantly, this solution teaches children to problem solve in a practical and relevant way. The article is divided into the following sections: Understanding disruption; Approaching discipline differently; A revealing worksheet; A space to reflect; A paper trail to resolution; and A problem-solving system.
