Find Your Image between the Extremes

Librarians' unfortunate fixation on image as a defining generational characteristic also makes them just as guilty of promoting misconceptions as nonlibrarians. Can the profession stand another article in the general press that trumpets the amazing new discovery that librarians can be young, trendy, stylish? The level of our colleagues' responsibility, or their abilities cannot be defined by clothes, piercings, hair color, tattoos, and makeup ... or lack thereof. In defining the image of nextgen librarians, there is a need to move beyond the extremes and think about where that image as a library professional originates. The need to break away from stereotype walks a fine line. Young librarians should realize that when they define themselves against the sensibly shod, bunned librarians of their elementary school days, they are in danger of falling into a stereotype themselves. Librarians must build an image based on who they really are. Individual images come down to common sense. Those who tilt more toward the individuality side of the scale will fit well in positions (Yale comes to mind) where their distinct image is appropriate and appreciated. Those who tilt more toward comfort might gravitate to a more informal working environment. Those in a Fortune 500 corporate environment might need to emulate other company cubicle dwellers in order to be taken seriously. This ever expanding profession has a style and a place for every personality, style, and image. When you find your perfect fit, you can settle into your library home.
