New Technology's Surprising Security Threats. Building Digital Libraries
Huwe, Terence
Computers in Libraries, v25 n2 p30-32 Feb 2005
In recent years, security issues have increasingly come to dominate the technological development process--although still in a more reactive than proactive mode. It now seems more important than ever to monitor security trends and policy developments, especially if technology is regarded as a potential community builder. This article suggests flexible thinking about security can carry far-reaching community benefits. It asserts three activist strategies to stay prepared for the collision between new technology and security and to use as guidelines for improving a library's overall mission: (1) Stay current in many disciplines; (2) Become a lobbyist; and (3) Think 3 to 5 years out. The article concludes that there will always be security threats associated with new technology. An active stance protects not only a library's collections and services, but also the needs of the library's patrons, who themselves are struggling to keep track of their own security problems. Maintaining a user-focused perspective is a library's is a vital contribution to security planning. Sections in this article include: Trojan Horse or Trick Pony?; Fighting a LOCKSS Lockout; The Horrors of Hacking; and Three Proactive Steps.
