Healing the "Unhealthy Native": Encounters with Standards-Based Education in Rural Alaska.
Jester, Timothy E.
Journal of American Indian Education, v41 n3 p1-21 2002
A qualitative study examined a rural Alaskan school district's standards-based reform in the sociohistorical context of Alaska Native education. Observations and interviews with 32 district staff members indicate that the district had recast the historical "civilization-savagism" paradigm as an "unhealthy Native" construct to explain Native students' academic failure and protect the district's standards-based system.
